Who doesn't read? Please, don't answer that or I might have to change this to "Why on Earth Don't You Like Books?!" I should say, that many, many people like to read. There, that was vague enough I think...:)
And if you like to read, you have certain pet peeves... in fact, a great many people who like to read have the same ones. And that is my topic on this June evening, because everyone likes to share their pet peeves and find common ground! (especially book readers. ;) )
I'm going to declare being inturrupted while reading as No. 1. Because let's say you are reading The Hound of the Baskerville's for the first time. Okay, now invision this: You're at the part where Watson and Sherlock are out on the dark and mysterious moor, and they hear the hound for the first time. Your fingers tingle as you read on and follow them as they find the hound has struck it's victim, the last remaining Baskerville! Oh no, you just can't believe-"Hey, what are you reading?"
"The Hound of the Baskervilles".-you can't believe that-"Oh. You want to do something? I'm bored."
"No! I'm reading. This is getting exciting."-You can't believe that th-"Well I don't know why you want to read that thing anyways, I mean it's not that interesting surely.."
Finally you throw down the book and give up, the mood is completely lost and it will take awhile for you to be able to reisnert yourself in the moor once again. But by this time the person who has inturrupted you suddenly discovers they want to talk to someone else, or picks up a book theirself. *fade from scene slowly*
I think everyone can sympathize with that one.
I'll try to write them shorter too. :)
No.2 would be the library's. At least, for me. Because if you like old books, you are going to have such a hard time finding a library that will be able to get a hold of that 1910 copy of *title*, as it is now too old/fragile to lend. Which means you have two options: hit the computer and buy a copy on ebay, amazon, or abebooks, or add it to the never-ending list of books you hope to find in a flea-market someday. IF you can afford them then.
No 3 Is recommending books until your blue in the face, and then standing by and watching that person STILL ignore said wonderful book-because truly, would I lead you wrong on a good read?
No 4 I having the spine of your book desamated because it took a fall from a chair arm, where it was set lying open, using the chair arm for a bookmark. (guilty confesion, this is something I have to watch out that I don't do when there isn't anything handy for a bookmark).
And No 5 would be books turned into a movie-becaue they are NEVER done right!
